Information

Buddhism and politics, or the politics of Buddhism

This group is for anyone with an interest in politics and/of Buddhism.

This includes but is not limited to:

-       A critical historical examination of the social, cultural, spiritual, and political reforms within ‘eastern’ contexts, and within ‘eastern Buddhisms’, commonly referred to as modernization; and the manner in which those reforms have altered Buddhism into the forms and shapes by which they are known today.

-       A critical historical examination of the social, cultural, spiritual, and political reforms of the late 1950’s – late 1970’s in the ‘west’, that formed the fertile ground upon which imported Buddhism could flourish; and the manner in which those reforms influenced the ‘western’ understanding and practice of certain strands of Buddhism.

-       The dialogue between ‘(post/late)modern Buddhisms’ and ‘western’, ‘leftist’ political ideologies and movements, such as: anarchism, feminism, social democracy, socialism, communism, queer theory/practice, anti-racism movement, green activism, refugee politics movement, etc.

-       A critical examination of power dynamics within ‘(post/late)modern Buddhisms’ and Buddhist institutions; for example: teacher-student relations in ‘east’ and ‘west’; teacher misconduct in ‘east’ and ‘west’; the role of minorities within ‘eastern’ and ‘western’ sanghas; the social, political and juridical structures of sanghas in ‘east’ and ‘west’; the Dorje Shugden controversy; the Zen.nl controversy; etc.

-       A critical examination of power dynamics between ‘(post/late)modern Buddhisms’ and non-Buddhist institutions and ideologies; for example: the interactions between China and the Dalai Lama; the interactions between Sinhalese Buddhist Nationalists and the Tamil Tigers; the affiliations between Shin, Zen, Shorinji Kenpo, and Japanese Nationalism, etc.
